Safety in Design

GIS/GCS are aware of the obligations imposed by the Construction (Design & Management Regulations 1994 (the CDM Regs.). In most cases GIS/GCS would fulfil the role of Designer, and one of the principal duties of the Designer is to consider the risks to the health and safety of those persons involved in the construction, maintenance and demolition of the structures being designed. If reasonably practicable, the hazards and risks must be reduced or removed completely by considering alternative designs, materials etc.

To ensure adequate consideration is given to health and safety in our designs, we have developed a Risk Assessment procedure which must be followed. The procedure includes provision for passing information on any remaining foreseen hazards to the Principal Contractor via the Safety Plan, or as required by the Planning Supervisor.

GIS/GCS existing design review procedures include the following:

Ensuring that all the necessary equipment and services are include( to allow the plant to achieve the basic specified process function.
Compliance with needs of the overall plant design criteria, flow sheets, data sheets and P&ID's to ensure correct performance.
Confirmation that all the necessary calculations have been carried out to prove the above.
Practicality and economy of the design.
Minimum practicable risk in construction, maintenance and demolition.
Confirmation that inter-discipline reviews have been carded out and any corrective actions implemented.
That any termination points/battery limits are as agreed.
That the plant/equipment layout allows good safe access and facilities for operation, inspection and maintenance purposes.
That personnel protection has been taken into account by provision of adequate guarding; protective lagging and insulation; acoustic level controls; handrails and platform upstands; safety showers etc.
That fire protection measures have been considered by the provision of proper means of escape; smoke detector and alarm systems; sprinkler or dry-riser systems; fire-fighting equipment etc.
That all the appropriate statutory requirements have been met. That the provision of utilities has been correctly addressed, including for emissions and discharge etc.
